This is a twelve-day certificate/diploma course for experienced counsellors/therapists/coaches and health care professionals from all modalities and backgrounds. It is run over four modules of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is a relational-integrative supervision training, covering theory and themes, with emphasis throughout on relationship and practice based concerns. It will include skills practice as well as preparation for application to the supervision register and is a pathway for experienced professionals who have or wish to develop a supervisory role. To be awarded the EGI Certificate in Supervision participants must complete the course requirements (see course outline document) including the written and practical assignments. Participants have the additional option to submit a written assignment and transcribed session for assessment for the EGI Diploma in supervision, subject to sufficient hours of supervised, supervision practice.

Is this training for me?

If you are an experienced, practising counsellor, psychotherapist coach or healthcare professional, wishing to extend and deepen your theoretical framework and competence as a supervisor, then yes. You will need to have a professional qualification and/or be accredited. It may also be suitable if you have equivalent training and experience – i.e. completed an initial training and have been practicing for a substantial time.

Training learning objectives

  • Generate a working definition of supervision
    • Clarify goals, purpose and responsibilities of supervisor and supervisee
    • Examine boundaries, tasks, process, and content of the supervisory relationship
    • Develop a working model of supervision in practice
    • Develop proficiency in working with shame, power, authority, difference and diversity
    • Develop ability to create and sustain a learning culture in dyad, agency and group contexts
    • Clarify ethical principles, practice and strategies including contracting, risk management, anti-discriminatory practice, boundary breaches, limits of competency and complaints
    • Examine and extend your personal creativity, range and styles of supervision using critical reflection and intervention analysis
    • Clarify role boundaries and practice between management, supervision, training and therapy/coaching
    • Examine developmental tasks, roles & learning levels
    • Develop practical understanding of relational, somatic, developmental, transferential and parallel processes as a central aspect of supervision practice
    • Explore and extend responses to conflict and resistance
    • Prepare for accreditation as a supervisor
